In His Own Words
The History
Growing up in Flint, MI, I was surrounded by a vibrant history of African Americans who excelled in sports and the legacies of their contributions. Basketball became my sport of choice, and in my city, it was common to see basketball players active in their communities, giving back to others in the neighborhood, and often mentoring younger athletes to help develop the next generation of success stories. Even today when I read a Flint newspaper or on social media, I encounter stories about African American basketball players. It's clear to me that sharing these experiences continues to be part of the African American basketball community culture of the city.
Since 1982, I've made Minnesota my home and the Twin Cities area my adopted community, yet I observed that we were missing this opportunity to use sports, basketball, to strengthen our generational bonds and at the same time, work to offset the all-too-common divide between our youth and elders. Having lived the Flint experience, I knew African American basketball in Minnesota was missing out.
The Discovery
When I moved to Minnesota in 1982, I was very interested in learning the local stories of African American basketball players. I was surprised and disappointed by what appeared to be a lack of information available. It was at that point, I began my search through local press articles, social media platforms and The Minnesota History Center, but the information available was limited. As I continued to settle into my new state, I stumbled upon a rich history of African American basketball players in Minnesota that deserves to be shared. This knowledge came from meeting former players and coaches and through their stories, I started this journey to educate myself about the state's past success stories.
I believe this history is essential for crafting an accurate narrative for future African American basketball players and athletes.
The Purpose
I wish the people in Minnesota could experience what I experienced in Flint, a legacy of African American basketball players who have excelled against the odds and always contributed to ensuring that history and tradition continue. In Flint, the legacy of African American sports is well-documented through the Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame. It's my goal to bring Minnesota the same.
The Why
This realization stirred something within me. I wanted to make a meaningful impact and felt compelled to discuss this history. I want to help young people connect with older generations, understand the sacrifices they made, and respect the legacy they have created for current and future generations. This motivation inspired me to form the Greater Twin Cities African American Basketball Hall of Fame.
